From Queen of the Bake to Queen of the Brake: Mary Berry brushes up on her driving skills

After recently shocking the world by announcing she will be leaving Great British Bake Off when it moves to Channel 4 (boo!), Mary Berry has spent some time brushing up on some skills of her own – behind the wheel.

After being a motorist for many decades, you may think the 81-year-old would want to sell a car and be driven around by someone else, but this is far from the truth! She recently completed a special Mature Driver Assessment organised by IAM Roadsmart (formerly the Institute of Advanced Motorists).

The hour-long course does not deliver a pass or fail and is purely advisory, but it aims to brush up the skills of older drivers. It works on correcting bad habits, boosting confidence and keeping them safer on the roads.

Areas covered in the course include pedal controls, dealing with traffic and other road users, hazard perception, hesitancy and much more.

These courses offer an excellent way for older drivers to remain on the roads whilst staying as safe as possible. There are some 4.5 million people over the age of 70 who are still driving in Britain, including 236 over the age of 100! Drivers who reach 70 must self-certify every three years that they are still fit to drive.

If you would like more details on the Mature Driver Assessment, either for yourself or a loved one, you can find it at the following address: https://www.iamroadsmart.com/courses/mature-driver-assessment.
