Top five best-selling cars in February

Official data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has revealed the best selling cars in February.

Traditionally, February is a slow month for car sales with the March plate change only a few weeks away. However, a total of 83,395 cars were registered, which is an 8.4% increase year-on-year, with a strong growth of 22.6% of these coming from retail sales.

We have taken a look at the five most popular cars bought in February, with one or two names possibly coming as a bit of a surprise!

  1. Ford Focus

Sales: 2,369

The Ford Focus starts out list off in 5th position, and is praised for being one of the most fun cars to drive on the market at this moment in time! The Focus is also surprisingly roomy for its size (although the boot is a touch on the small side) and as a typical, family-sized hatchback, it has everything you could possibly want.

With a plethora of engine choices, decent fuel consumption, reliability and good safety features, the Focus is a perfect choice if you are looking for a family sized car which is also fun to drive.

  1. Vauxhall Corsa

Sales: 2,408

The Vauxhall Corsa has been a firm favourite for many years now, and accounts for almost a third of all Vauxhall car sales. Like the Focus, there are a number of different engine variations you can choose from, depending on how you are planning to use your car.

However, the Corsa has been known for reliability problems, and has often received very sub-standard results in customer satisfaction questionnaires. That being said, it does have high safety ratings, is fairly cheap to run, and after coming fourth in our list, is still very popular with the UK public.

  1. Nissan Qashqai

Sales: 2,486

The Qashqai was the first car to combine the 4x4 style with running costs equal to that of a hatchback, which quickly made the car a firm favourite of the British public. Spacious and comfortable, good fuel consumption and solid safety ratings are all appealing features of the Qashqai.

There have been some reports of them being difficult to drive due to limited visibility, so this may be worth considering before you purchase. The price can also be slightly higher than some of the other cars on this list, but the Nissan does hold its value very well, which is perfect when it comes to selling your car in the future.

  1. Volkswagen Golf

Sales: 2,574

Featuring at number two is the Volkswagen Golf, which is perhaps surprising given the recent “Dieselgate” scandal surrounding the cars. However, the Golf is still one of the best hatchbacks you can buy thanks to it being spacious, comfortable and very easy to drive.

The 1.6-litre diesel is a firm favourite of many people opting for a Golf, thanks to a very good fuel consumption and offering excellent value for money. As with the Qashqai, the Golf holds its value well making it a great long-term buy. Whether the Golf will continue to feature highly will no doubt depend on the pending investigation into Volkswagen, but for now, the unwavering popularity of the Golf makes it a firm choice in second place.

  1. Ford Fiesta

Sales: 4,507

Storming its way to the top spot is the Ford Fiesta, which is hardly surprising for one of the best selling cars in Britain, with a host of awards under its belt. The Fiesta is often regarded as an extremely fun drive, and offers the driver high levels of comfort to boot. Some of the more basic models perhaps aren’t as well equipped as you would like, meaning you might have to upgrade a few levels to get the most out of the model.

The Fiesta is reasonably affordable and comes with very good safety ratings, having performed particularly well in crash tests. It usually performs better in most areas than its closest competitors such as the Peugeot 208 and Seat Ibiza which is undoubtedly why it is still such a popular choice on the roads of Britain.
