It may sound like something straight out of a satirical newspaper, but it is true! Volkswagen sold more sausages than cars during 2015…

Volkswagen sold more sausages than cars in 2015

The Volkswagen emissions scandal has clearly hurt the popularity of cars, but not the VW branded currywurst, with 7.3 million sausages being sold in 2015, nearly one million more than in 2014.

Car sales, however, fell from 6.12 million to 5.82 million in 2015, which is a drop of 4.8 per cent.

The sausages are sold in the company canteen and factories, as well as supermarkets across Germany. And if making sausages wasn’t enough, Volkswagen also make their own ketchup, which reached a record level of production too, rising to 608,208kg in 2015 from 536,826kg in 2014.

Volkswagen year has been somewhat unsettled ever since environmental authorities in America found that the company had been fitting their diesel cars with emission cheating software.

A committee of 45 Members of the European Parliament will now spend 12 months looking into how Volkswagen were able to rig these emissions tests. This investigation will look into whether they were given political cover by the European Commission and national governments in the EU.

Up to 11 million diesel vehicles worldwide are thought to have been fitted with software to mask emissions, and we suspect it’ll be a little while until there is a resolution to this issue.
